Prostate Cancer Resource Center
Chesapeake Urology Associates and its physicians are at the forefront of detecting and treating prostate cancer. Each year, we diagnose thousands of prostate problems and provide the most advanced treatments available, including Robot Assisted Radical Prostatectomy, an exciting new minimally invasive surgical treatment for many prostate cancers.
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is usually about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that makes up part of the semen.
Affecting 200,000 plus men each year, prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer as the most common male cancer in the U.S. Men aged 50 and older, African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk. Fortunately, most prostate cancers are slow growing and can be detected at an early stage, when most can be cured.
